My local grocery store doesn’t normally carry fresh turmeric, so when I spied it next to the ginger, I busted out the Carlton.
^^^ That’s turmeric. It looks like ginger got frisky with a carrot. ^^^
Anyway, turmeric can be difficult to spot at the grocery store because there is little demand for the fresh version in this country. Instead, we tend to use the ground version, which you can definitely do for this smoothie!
Turmeric has been used in Chinese and Indian medicine for centuries in order to treat inflammation, jaundice, menstrual discomfort, chest pain, colic, and more. We now know turmeric helps alleviate and treat inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, cystic fibrosis, and cancer. Not to mention, turmeric aids in digestion, boosts your immune system, and and lowers your cholesterol. It is full of antioxidants and is famous for being extremely cleansing for your liver.

Combining fresh turmeric with ginger and golden beets, which are full of Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, results in an all-star cleansing smoothie. A superfood root trifecta. “That’s all well and good”, you say…”but how does it taste?” Let’s face it: beets are earthy and turmeric can be a bit bitter. Therefore, adding mango, banana, fresh ginger, and orange zest to the smoothie makes for a tasty drink. Can you still taste the golden beet? Yes. But besides an earthy flavor, this smoothie tastes zesty, sweet, and tropical. It’s one of those rarer non-green green smoothies. It’s “green” because of all the roots (count ’em: THREE types of roots in this smoothie!). But it’s not actually green. It’s yella.
Incorporating roasted walnuts and chia seeds adds texture and helps create a fine balance of fiber, natural sugars, vitamins and minerals, protein, and Omega 3s. It detoxifies. It cleanses. It’s three-root green smoothie that is not actually green.
You’re going to want this after Cinco de Mayo. You’re going to want this for sexto de mayo.
Beet-Turmeric-Mango Smoothie
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 small golden beet scrubbed and chopped
- 1 ripe banana peeled and frozen
- 1 ripe mango peeled and chopped
- 2 teaspoons fresh turmeric peeled and grated
- 2 teaspoons ginger peeled and grated
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1-1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk
For serving:
- Chopped walnuts
- Chia seeds
- Full-fat coconut milk
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a high-powered blender and blend until smooth.
- Serve smoothies with chopped walnuts, chia seeds, and a drizzle of coconut milk

Can I use frozen beets from the store instead of fresh? Anything else but ginger can I use I dont like it?

I typically use cooked beets because it brings out the natural sugar for a sweeter smoothie and also eliminates some of the earthiness of the beet, but you can definitely leave it raw too. In fact, most people just use raw beet rather than cooked 😉 Hope you enjoy!
I loved this recipe! I changed it a bit because I didn’t have all the ingredients: replaced the beet with 1 tsp. beet powder, excluded the banana for fewer calories, used a big splash of OJ instead of orange peel. Excellent!
