Given how un-technologically savvy I am, itโ€™s a truly a wonder that I own and operate a website. …webblogโ€ฆblogโ€ฆblogsiteโ€ฆwebpage. Whatever.

What you see here is a polished version of what is actually a complete cluster of I-donโ€™t-understand-how-any-of-this-really-works.  You donโ€™t get to see my back end..errrโ€ฆback officeโ€ฆwhere all the files, code, and techy stuff is housed for this site. And truthfully, I donโ€™t spend much time back there, eitherโ€ฆbecause itโ€™s dark, confusing, and very mysterious.

So when something remotely tech-related needs to happen on my site, I do what every all-star site owner would do: I ignore it for as long as possible.  And then I call someone and have them deal with it.

I began getting emails a few weeks ago from the company that backs up my site, informing me they couldnโ€™t perform the back up. I also noticed my posts stopped showing up in my blog feed. So true to form, I ignored it all. And then I waited for the most opportune time to finally buck up and handle it like a champ. Which was yesterday morning. While hungover from Saturday nightโ€™s ladies night. Because hungover is the perfect state to be in when you need to deal with anything that already doesnโ€™t make sense.

In order to resolve my tech issue, I had to make a phone call. This is how the phone call went:

โ€œSiteLock, this is Matt, how can I help you?โ€

โ€œHiiiiiii! Yes, hi. Iโ€™m calling because one of you people..โ€ < – – – seriously? Who says, โ€œyou peopleโ€?  โ€œโ€ฆ.ahemโ€ฆexcuse me. I meanโ€ฆ one of your colleagues from my site hostโ€ฆserverโ€ฆFTPโ€ฆ warehouseโ€ฆstorageโ€ฆfacilityโ€ฆcalled me a few weeks ago to tell me my site had been hacked by spybots with malware or whatever, so I upgraded to your antiviral program that, like keeps spam out of my site. Or whatever. And after I did that, my blog feed, like done broke itself. CauseIwriteablog. Itโ€™s a blog I writeโ€ฆmy websiteโ€™s not a website, itโ€™s a blog. And Iโ€™ve been getting emails from VaultPress telling me they canโ€™t back up my site because thereโ€™s a problem with my IP address or something. And my posts donโ€™t show up in feeds like feedly, bloglovinโ€™โ€ฆโ€ < – – – did I seriously just reference โ€œbloglovinโ€™โ€ to a tech guy? Ugh. โ€œSo anyway, I donโ€™t know if thereโ€™s a link between the anti-spam thing and this feed thingโ€ฆI assume there is, but I donโ€™t really kno โ€“โ€œ

โ€œWhatโ€™s your email address, maโ€™am?โ€ < – – – I got ma’am-ed. Stab, twist.

โ€œItโ€™s roasted root fooooooood at gmail dot cooooooomโ€

โ€œOkay, yes, I see here we set up a firewall for you a few weeks ago. So basically the firewall is doing exactly as itโ€™s supposed to, which is great. But it severed the connection between your IP address and certain users in order to prohibit them from doing harm to your site. So youโ€™re invisible to some people right now. In fact, youโ€™re invisible to me, even.โ€

I whisper: โ€œIโ€™muhninjaaaaโ€

He continues: โ€œโ€ฆ.This is really an easy fix. We just need to white list your IP address. One of our support crew can help you with that but unfortunately, they donโ€™t work on weekends. So I hate to ask this, but do you mind calling back tomorrow?โ€

โ€œNot at all!…but soโ€ฆwhenIcallbackโ€ฆwhat do I, likeโ€ฆ.say? I tell them I need to be added to the white pages?โ€ < – – – I SWEAR, Iโ€™m not normally this helpless. Except I am.

chuckle

โ€œSo youโ€™ll just tell them you need to white list an IP address. It should only take them five minutes.โ€

โ€œOkay. Okay, got it. Alright. White list. And. Okay. So, what does this whole thing meeeeeeeeeean? Like, why would my feed juststopworking?โ€ < – – – clearly, I wanted to keep talking to this person.

โ€œAgain, when the firewall was set up, it hid your IP address from potential malicious users, which has made your feed invisible.โ€

โ€œOh okay, alright, thankyousomuch, Iโ€™ll call tomorrow. And yes, thanks, I appreciate all your help.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re very welcome. Thank you for choosing SiteLock and you have a great weekend.โ€

And that, my friends, is what back end maintenance looks like.

All this tech stuff really whets my appetite, so I whipped out these insanely easy superfood megalomaniacal roasted beets with orange-tahini dressing  and had to remind myself as I was wolfing the ENTIRE thing down, that no, Juliaโ€ฆyou do not need to eat 8 beets in one sitting. Because fiber.

Case in point: this beet salad was a true delight. AND it can be made into a proper green salad lickety split. You just add greens, you see. And avocado would be scrambunctious. And chopped walnuts and red onions. All great ideas! Now you see me rambleโ€ฆ

Now you donโ€™t!

Questions and Reviews

  1. Okay, so I don’t use a lot of that abbreviated lingo-stuff, almost never really. but OMGEEEE, you had me ROTFL. I think there’s another one, something about “… my *ss off” which would apply but I’ll skip it. Yes, you are ONE with many of us, and you brought all of us comfort. Lovely site by the way, lovin’ the lay of the land. And dynamite roasted dish!! Keep up the great work.

  2. All the techy stuff seriously stresses me out. Glad I’m not alone. Let’s stick to the food together ok? Love these beets but that sauce sounds amazing!!

  3. Julia, you always seam so perfectly put together; I like this side of you…mainly because it makes me feel better about my absolute ineptness when it comes to technology! ha ha
I’m loving these flavors especially together in the salad that you just made up at the very end!

  4. I think this whole post is secretly about MEEEEEEEE!!! I am SO technologically challenged and I honestly have no freaking idea how I even have a functioning blog. In other news, you are hilarious and I want to swan dive into those beets immediately.

  5. oh my god this sounds just like me. I’m scared of my back end and never fuss around because I’m afraid I’m going to press a button and my whole site will crash or blow up!!! Seriously scary! Anyhow, it looks like you made this salad just for me!! (I’m going to pretend that at least!) Everything I love all on one plate. Perfection.

  6. Gah, tech stuff. It totally confuses the hell out of me. I’m fairly intelligent, but after dealing coding and IP whatevers, I’m left feeling deflated. Stuffing my face with food always makes me feel better. Love this.

  7. Yes, that is basically me whenever I call my hosting company. Except, I sound much more abrasive and am ready to sue them for everything. I blame the fact that I am marrying a lawyer for that. I’m glad it’s all fixed!!!!

  8. Haha. I am technologically challenged too. Thankfully, my husband is a huge help. I don’t know what I’d do without him! These roasted roots look so good, my friend! I’m hungry now!

  9. Glad your site is back on track. Love the way this looks, tahini and beets sounds really good together.

  10. Haha….this totally sounds like me, to a T!! I haaate dealing with tech issues, mostly because I have no idea what any of it actually means, and I secretly hope that if I put off dealing with it long enough that it will just go away on its own. Although, sadly that never happens and I end up having a call with tech support that sounds just like yours.

Also, beet salad. So much love!!

  11. You crack me up!! My back end is dark and scary too, lol. No really, my featured image has been showing up blurry in Bloglovin’ for like, 3 months or something but yep, I’m procrastinating fixing that.
Let’s just stick to the fun stuff like beets with orange tahini dressing! Holy perfection, this will be happening in my mouth soon.

  12. Oh my gosh, that scenario describes my morning today to a T. I hate having to call them and be all, “Yeah I run a website, I know what I’m doing” and then they ask one question with an acronym in it like IP or VPS and I’m all “uhhhhhhhhhhh I don’t know how to live help me.” I could’ve definitely used this salad after being on the phone with them for an hour!

    1. Let the technologically-challenged unite in a potluck circle of egg salad sandwiches and roasted beets! And all the beers. Hope you got your problem resolved, my dear! I’m still working on mine ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. hahaha what a conversation. i have no knowledge when it comes to things like this and add hangover to the convo…this salad on the other hand looks stunning.

  14. Hello, gorgeous! That is one STUNNING plate of beets. The dressing is just calling my name.

  15. HAHAHA oh my gosh. We are one. That is EXACTLY how my tech calls go..when I make them that is.
    Which is never.
I used to try to get my hubby to do it for me. He was like ” are you 5?”
P.s These beets? Yes. How you managed to make beets so pretty BLOWS MAH MIND.
    Pinned!
