This healthy 4-ingredient chocolate mousse is made with ripe avocado and pure maple syrup or honey in a food processor. You’d never know this simple recipe was dairy-free and paleo!
True story: all through his twenties, my dad was a skinny minny, and he would eat chocolate mousse and drink chocolate shakes right before bed to try to gain weight.
While his strategy did not pan out (the wolverine-like metabolism runs rampant in our DNA), he bestowed upon his offspring the unrelenting love for – you guessed it – chocolate.
While I’m a big advocate for treating myself on a regular basis, we all know fully-leaded chocolate mousse isn’t all that great for our bodacious bods on a daily basis.
But as it turns out, we can make healthy chocolate mousse using wholesome ingredients.
I love enjoying recipes like this regularly and don’t feel the need to wait for a special occasion.
This loose interpretation of classic chocolate mousse is made with all simple, all natural, all healthy ingredients.
Rather than using heavy cream and going through the egg yolk tempering process, I used my spirit fruit-veggie – the avocado.
It may sound strange, but avocado makes for a creamy, dreamy, thick mousse. You can also look at it as chocolate avocado pudding.
I promise you can’t taste the avocado past the chocolate!
Health Benefits of Avocado Chocolate Mousse:
Avocados are full of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, which are great for your brain, skin, and digestive system.
The healthy fat in avocados boosts your metabolism and helps absorb the essential vitamins and minerals in your food.
Additionally, raw cacao powder is full of minerals and antioxidants.
Combining these superfoods results in a dessert that spans beyond the reaches of delicious – it is also quite healthy for you!
This recipe includes only 4 super simple ingredients (5 if you count salt): avocados, honey, non-dairy milk, and raw cacao powder).
Let’s discuss the simple ingredients for chocolate avocado pudding in detail, as each one serves and important role.
Ingredients for Avocado Chocolate Mousse:
Fresh Ripe Avocados: Taking the place of heavy cream in traditional chocolate mousse, we use ripe avocados as our fat source. Be sure to use ripe avocados that are fairly soft.
I love that fresh avocado bring a rich flavor, silky texture, and also add healthy fats.
Pure Maple Syrup or Honey: The natural sweetener options in this healthy dessert recipe. I like using either pure maple syrup or honey. For vegan chocolate mousse, use pure maple syrup.
While I have never used date syrup myself, I believe it would work as well.
Milk of Choice: Pick your favorite kind of milk to help blend all of the ingredients together.
I like using a dairy-free milk like full-fat canned coconut milk, but oat milk, almond milk, cashew milk, soy milk, coconut cream, and regular milk works too.
Cocoa Powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder is the chocolate portion of the recipe. I like using raw cacao powder, but any kind of unsweetened cocoa powder works. The end result is a dark chocolate flavor.
Sea Salt: Add a pinch of salt to enhance all of the flavors.
You can also add chocolate chips or a dark chocolate bar to the food processor for little chunks of dark chocolate in this chocolate avocado mousse recipe.
Now that we’ve covered the basic ingredients for healthy chocolate mousse, let’s make it!
How to Make Avocado Chocolate Mousse:
Add all of the ingredients for the chocolate mousse to a food processor.
Secure the lid on the food processor and process until all of the ingredients are well combined. If need be, use a rubber spatula to scrape the sides of the food processor to keep blending until a creamy texture results.
Taste the avocado chocolate pudding for flavor and add extra maple syrup or a pinch of sea salt to your personal taste.
Serve immediately, and enjoy! I like serving avocado mousse with fresh fruit like fresh raspberries or blueberries and whipped cream.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and keep it for up to 3 days.
You can also freeze this pudding in freezer-safe containers to make chocolate avocado ice cream.
Recipe Adaptations:
- Make this recipe low carb or keto by omitting the pure maple syrup and adding liquid stevia or 1/3 cup powdered sugar-free sweetener such as xylitol or monk fruit sweetener. Add an additional 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk to make up for the loss of liquid.
- Add 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract and/or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
- Add a little bourbon if you’re looking for a booze-infused dessert.
- Want to substitute the raw cacao powder for unsweetened cocoa powder? No problem!
- Want to add a small cooked beet for some extra Vitamins and antioxidants? Much encouraged! Follow this recipe for Vegan Beet Chocolate Pudding.
- Make this recipe with honey instead of pure maple syrup for a non-vegan version.
I have used this avocado chocolate mousse recipe to make Dairy-Free Fudgesicles. Simply follow the same method in this post and transfer the mousse to a popsicle mold!

Hello! Just wondering how long you think this would keep in the fridge for? Can’t wait to try it!
Thanks!
Hi there! I would say it should be good for 4 to 5 days in the fridge. You can also freeze it in a jar – I do it all the time! 🙂
This was really amazing! I served it in a champagne glass with some thawed cool whip topped with a crumbled, stale cookie. I don’t like avocados and served it to my man who doesn’t like too much chocolate. We both loved it.
Yeeeeeeeeah! I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the mousse! I was amazed by how easy and tasty the recipe turned out, too. Amazing what you can make out of all-natural ingredients! Thanks so much for giving your feedback, Alex! xoxo
Oh how I wish I had your dad’s problem! I can’t think of a more delicious way to gain weight. But I think would like this version better than whatever he ate because I have a case of the crazies now and think way too deep about everything I’m eating. Thankfully avocado and almond milk can make mousse just as dreamy!
OMG I love avocados with chocolate. This is the type of dessert I used to have when I was little living in Brazil. Your recipe brought me good childhood memories, my friend 😉
Chocolate avocado mousse is on of my favorite indulgences, especially this time of year!!
Healthy chocolate mousse? Pretty sure I just died and went to chocolate heaven!
Your dad clearly knows what’s good. Chocolate is always welcome, day or night, in life. Love this creamy mousse!
This is gorgeous! That photo of the mousse in the food processor makes me want to dive right in. I think I could eat all of that, no help needed…
OMG I need this. Right now.
Ahh this is my fave dessert! I had it once like a year+ ago at a restaurant and of course was thinking “yeah how good could it be”. I was SO WRONG. The only thing that makes it better is how easy it is to make!
This looks delicious! So fluffy 🙂
that’s so funny that your Dad ate chocolate mousse like it was his job to gain weight, i wish i could do that! I love how few ingredients this has and most importantly that it features the famous AVOCADO!!
My mom and dad did the same thing, but with cookie dough and cookies every night! I love this recipe for chocolate mousse! I want to dive into this bowl!! Pinning! 🙂 Happy Monday, dear.
It’s beyond creamy!!! O yum yum!
