Letโs discuss the simple ingredients for honey garlic chicken. The great news is you can find them at any grocery store!
Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken Ingredients:
Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs or Breasts: The main ingredient. We need either boneless chicken thighs or boneless skinless chicken breasts, or a combination of both. I prefer boneless thighs in this application, because the chicken turns out more tender, with a richer flavor.
Honey: One of the main ingredients here! Honey is the sweet component of the sweet and savory sauce.
Lemon Juice and Rice Vinegar: Here for some sour flavor! I love adding tangy flavor to marinades and sauces because it helps balance out the flavor profile. Apple cider vinegar works in place of rice wine vinegar if it is what you have on hand.
Liquid Aminos or Soy Sauce: Adding umami flavor to the sauce, liquid aminos brings richness and saltiness. Use soy sauce, tamari, or coconut aminos instead if you prefer.
Avocado Oil and Toasted Sesame Oil: Every good marinade or sauce has a little fat. I like using avocado oil and sesame oil for a balance of rich sesame flavor that isnโt too overpowering.
Fresh Garlic: Garlic brings a big boost of flavor to the sauce! Feel free to add more or less depending on your preference.
Sea Salt and Black Pepper: Season the chicken to taste with salt and pepper.
Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour: Used to thicken the sauce. I use gluten-free all-purpose flour, but you can use regular all-purpose flour, cornstarch or tapioca flour.
Feel free to add fresh ginger and/or hoisin sauce to the sauce ingredients for added flavors.
Now that weโve covered the basic ingredients, letโs make crockpot honey garlic chicken.
How to Make Crock Pot Honey Garlic Chicken:
Chop the chicken into bite-sized pieces and transfer them to the bottom of the crock pot. Note: you can leave the chicken thighs or breasts whole too. For the most tender result, I recommend using chicken thighs.
In a small bowl, combine all of the ingredients for the sauce (honey, lemon juice, rice vinegar, liquid aminos or soy sauce, avocado oil, sesame oil, minced garlic, black pepper, sea salt, and flour).
Mix until everything is well combined and any clumps of flour have dissolved.
Pour the sauce into the slow cooker with the chopped chicken. Use a rubber spatula or a wooden spoon to stir everything well.
Cook on High heat for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until the sauce is very bubbly and the chicken is golden brown. You can check the internal temperature of the chicken by inserting a meat thermometer into several pieces to get an accurate read.
