The earthy flavor of beets can be difficult to mask in a smoothie, yet I have found the formula that hides the beet flavor with this amazing smoothie recipe. It is a great way to get in a variety of micronutrients while enjoying each and every sip.
I’m not lying when I say for me, this healthy beet smoothie tastes like a liquified version of apple pie with vanilla ice cream.

Beet Smoothie Ingredients:
Cooked Beets: Either buy pre-cooked beets from the store, or cook beets using your preferred method. I use Love Beets cooked beets in this beet smoothie recipe. This saves a great deal of time, as beets take a long time to cook.
If you are roasting your own raw beets, be sure to use three 3 small-medium beets, which is roughly 6 ounces. Using three large beets will not a delicious smoothie make. I use red beets, but any color of beets, including golden beets, will work.
Frozen Blueberries: A generous amount of blueberries goes into this easy smoothie recipe. While you can use fresh blueberries, I prefer using frozen blueberries because the end result is a cold smoothie with lovely texture.
While you can use fresh beets, I prefer the texture of cooked beets in smoothies because the texture turns out nice and creamy. The cooking process also helps remove some of the earthy flavor as well.
Light Canned Coconut Milk: The ingredient that brings creamy flavor and silky texture, making us feel like we’re drinking something exotic. It also adds healthy fats to the smoothie, with aids in the absorption of all of the Vitamins.
For the best results, use light canned coconut milk or full-fat canned coconut milk as opposed to coconut milk from a carton.
Unfiltered Apple Cider: An all-star ingredient that adds sweetness and lovely apple flavor to make the flavor of this beet smoothie shine. It helps hide the beet flavor and really enhances the experience. Apple juice works too.
Chia Seeds: Adding omega-3 fatty acids to the smoothie, chia seeds are a superfood. Chia seeds do thicken as they sit so be sure to drink the smoothie right away. The smoothie will become thicker the longer it sits.
Ground Cinnamon: A pinch of ground cinnamon completes our apple pie flavor, making us feel like we’re enjoying some sort of apple pie milkshake! Don’t skip it unless you aren’t into cinnamon. Cinnamon helps reduce blood sugar, which is ideal for higher sugar smoothies like this.
Recipe Customizations:
- Substitute beet juice, almond milk, orange juice, pomegranate juice, or cranberry juice for the apple cider. It will change the flavor, but this antioxidant beet smoothie will still taste great!
- If you’re using fresh blueberries, add some ice cubes to the blender.
- โAdd your favorite fresh fruit or frozen fruit such as strawberries, mixed berries, pineapple, or mango.
- Toss in 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds, flax seeds, or nut butters for added health benefits.
- โAdd the beet greens to this smoothie if you had a bunch of fresh beets with the greens attached.
- Toss in a frozen banana if you enjoy the flavor of banana in smoothies.
- If you’re into tropical flavors, substitute the berries for mango and use orange juice instead of apple cider.

How to Make a Beet Smoothie:
Cook the beets according to your preferred method. Be sure to perform this task well in advance so that you can refrigerate the beets after cooking them until they are completely chilled. You can also do as I do and buy cooked beets from the produce section of the grocery store.
Add all of the ingredients for the beet smoothie to a high powered blender. Secure the lid and blend until all of the ingredients are combined and a creamy texture results. Taste the smoothie for flavor.
If you’d like for it to taste sweeter, add a little maple syrup or some pitted medjool dates. You can also add more cinnamon. I find this smoothie has a great deal of natural sweetness, so I love it as is.
โPour smoothie into a large glass, and enjoy! You can get fancy by garnishing the top with extra chia seeds and chopped pistachios if you’d like.
