So youโ€™re looking for a burger in a hurry and you want it to turn out just right?

Well, this just in: Making burgers in the air fryer is quick, simple, and can easily be made to your desired level of doneness.

Plus, we all know the burger toppings can be one of the most exciting parts, so thereโ€™s plenty of room to experiment here.

While I love the classic lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado combination, I also enjoy making caramelized onions or even adding sauerkraut when Iโ€™m feeling fancy. Guacamole bacon cheeseburgers? Coming right up!

If youโ€™re already accustomed to making fries in the air fryer, hereโ€™s your perfect excuse to enjoy some air fryer fries!

Letโ€™s discuss the simple ingredients for this easy air fryer hamburger recipe.

Air Fryer Hamburger Ingredients:

Ground Beef: Pick your favorite ground beef for hamburgers. For the juiciest, most flavorful hamburgers, aim for a higher fat content, such as 80/20, or 85/15.

For leaner hamburgers, stick with lean ground beef such as 90/10 or 97/3. Use ground turkey instead of ground beef if you prefer.ย

When making air fryer turkey burgers, cook the burgers for a total of 10-12 minutes or until they reach an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Soy Sauce: Adding a little soy sauce to the hamburger meat brings rich umami flavor and also adds salt content. You can also use liquid aminos, coconut aminos, or tamari here. Rather than using soy sauce, you can use 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce.ย

Seasonings: Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Black Pepper. The simple combination of garlic powder, onion powder and black pepper seasons these juicy burgers to perfection.

If you have specific seasonings or dry rubs you enjoy adding to burgers, feel free to apply them.

Hamburger Buns: Pick your favorite hamburger buns! I use gluten-free hamburger buns, but any kind works great.

If you follow a low carb diet or a grain-free diet, use lettuce wraps instead of burger buns for these air-fried burgers.

In addition to the basics for the burgers, we also need some delicious toppings! Select your favorite toppings, such as the ones I suggest below.

Burger Toppings:

Lettuce

Tomato

Red Onion

Avocado

Pickles

Cheese

Sauces of Choice: Mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, BBQ sauce, chipotle mayo and ranch dressing are all fabulous selections for burger sauces.

I sometimes like getting fancy with my cheese selection but classic American cheese is also acceptable. If you’re going for a sort of smash burger effect, stick with American cheese for your air fryer cheeseburgers.

Now that weโ€™ve covered the basic ingredients list, letโ€™s make some delicious air fryer hamburgers!

How to Make Air Fryer Hamburgers:

Transfer all of the ingredients for the hamburger meat to a large bowl and use your hands to mix everything together until well combined.

Pouring soy sauce into a mixing bowl with ground beef.

Form 4 equal sized patties out of the beef mixture, making the patties about ยฝ inch thick each.

Cutting board with four beef patties on top and hands forming the patties. Ready to cook.

Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes.

Transfer the burger patties to the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook for 5 minutes in the preheated air fryer.

Flip and cook an additional 3 to 5 minutes, or until the burger patties reach an internal temperature of 155 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

Flipping the air fryer patty to the other side.

Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the burgers by inserting it into the thickest part of the burgers.

If adding a slice of cheese to make cheeseburgers, do so 1 to 2 minutes before the burgers are finished cooking.

The burgers can be pulled out of the air fryer at 155 degrees F, as they will continue cooking as they rest. Let burgers rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.ย

Serve burgers on toasted buns with cheddar cheese, avocado, sliced tomato, thinly sliced red onion and leafy green lettuce.

Store leftover burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. You can reheat burgers in the air fryer or microwave.

You can also freeze burgers in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.

Tips For Air Fryer Burgers:

Use a Meat Thermometer! For the best results, check the internal temperature of the burgers after 8 minutes of total cooking time (3 minutes into cooking the second side). This ensures the burgers donโ€™t turn out overcooked. A digital thermometer is your best friend when you have a specific level of doneness you’re aiming for.

If you enjoy medium-rare burgers, you can cook the burgers for less time, but use caution as the FDA recommends burgers be cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit minimum for food safety.

Leave plenty of room between each burger. If you have the time and patience to cook one to two burgers at a time, this will generate the best results unless the size of your air fryer basket is rather large.

How Long to Cook Burgers in Air Fryer:

At 375 degrees Fahrenheit, burgers should take about 8 to 10 minutes, or until they reach an internal temperature of at least 155 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you prefer well-done hamburgers, cook the burgers to 160 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Remember if you’re using ground turkey instead of ground beef that the burgers must be cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit for food safety. A total of 10-12 minutes at 375 should result in the perfect burger.

Questions and Reviews

  1. My husband asked for a cheeseburger for supper tonight- his first meal that sounded good to him since contracting Covid. The thought of making the kitchen reek of grease and eating one of my patented overcooked burgers sounded absolutely unappealing. I remembered Julia sending out her column about air fryer burgers!!!! I pulled it up and cooked the meat patties using gluten free soy sauce and lightly seasoned. Did I have doubt about how they would come out? Yes, I did. I should not have!! The burgers were easy, moist and juicy and absolutely delicious!!! I wonโ€™t be making burgers any other way. My sick husband said it tasted like he imagined it would. On my gluten free bun-I really enjoyed my burger. It was excellent!!! Great way to cook a burger. Thanks, Julia!! It is just so easy.

    1. Gotta love those experiences where the result turns out better than expected! I’m so thrilled you and your husband enjoy the air fryer method for cooking burgers. I just love how quick and simple the process is, and the cleanup is a cinch! Much love to you and your husband and warm wishes on his journey back to health ๐Ÿ™‚ xoxox
